Little River is titled for the Little River, which flows into the Atlantic at the border between North and South Carolina.

Little River is positioned at 33 52 18 N 78 37 40 W (33.871629, -78.627733). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the CDP has a total region of 10.8 square miles (28.0 km ), of which, 10.5 square miles (27.1 km ) of it is territory and 0.4 square miles (0.9 km ) of it (3.33%) is water.

During the 21 years that South Carolina had legalized video poker, Little River's locale near the North Carolina state line made the improve a primary center for the activity.

Little River has the state's only two casino boats, the Sun - Cruz Aquasino and The Big M Casino. Little River was the first known improve in Horry County and was first settled by the Lewis's and Waitie, Vereen and Tilighman families. It was known as a trade goods port and fishing community, and was a regular haunt of pirates seeking refuge in its salt water marshes and estuaries off the ocean.

First President George Washington visited Little River and spent the evening with Jeremiah Vereen in his cabin near the South Carolina/North Carolina state line.
